Speculation is mounting that Putrajaya may call an early election this year despite Malaysia’s ongoing fuel crisis. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently ruled out polls within two months, but reports suggest he is still weighing the option. Analysts believe any campaign message would emphasize stability, unity, and strong leadership amid rising subsidies, which have surged from RM700 million to RM2 billion monthly due to Middle East conflict.
Snap Election
UMNO leader Ahmad Maslan urged postponement, arguing voters are struggling with high costs. His remarks, later clarified as personal views, highlight divisions within BN, which previously benefited from snap polls in Melaka and Johor. Opposition voices in PKR and DAP also support delays, citing public interest. Analysts like Oh Ei Sun warn economic conditions will remain difficult, while Syaza Shukri of IIUM says postponement allows the government to focus on governance. Younger voters, however, demand more tangible promises than stability alone.
