Teoh Beng Hock’s case, once a major focus in the late 2000s, continues to inspire a new generation. Despite being only nine when Beng Hock died in MACC custody on July 16, 2009, 24-year-old Universiti Malaya law graduate Liau Pin Chun is now actively supporting the Teoh family’s quest for justice.

The DAP aide’s death, initially ruled a suicide in 2011, was later attributed to unlawful acts by unknown individuals, including MACC officers, in a 2014 Court of Appeal ruling. Liau, who first learned about the case as a child, is driven by its enduring impact on Malaysian society.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the police’s handling of the Teoh Beng Hock Walk for Justice outside Parliament yesterday could be “improved”. A brief altercation occurred after police formed a human barrier between Parliament and the protesters around 10am yesterday, which halted the procession from its destination.
