Massive Fire in Sandakan Displaces Over 9,000 Residents

1 min read

SANDAKAN – More than 9,000 residents were displaced after a massive fire destroyed about 1,000 stilt houses in Kampung Bahagia early Monday. District police chief ACP George Abd Rakman said the blaze was reported at 1.30 a.m. and the area declared a disaster zone by 4 a.m.

Authorities confirmed no fatalities, though some residents sustained minor injuries while rescuing belongings. Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said the fire engulfed over four hectares, with low tide complicating water access. Operations concluded at noon, and investigations into the cause are ongoing. Disaster relief efforts are underway with multiple agencies.
