PETALING JAYA, May 10, 2025 — Tuberculosis (TB) remains a top five infectious disease in Penang, with 1,273 cases reported last year, down 2.3% from 1,303 in 2023, but still claiming 125 lives. Heavy smokers and elderly men, especially Malays, are most at risk due to weakened immune systems, said Dr. Rozaini Mat Shah, state health deputy director. Public health efforts will now focus on these groups to curb TB, alongside dengue and other infectious diseases.
