Rescuers have recovered the body of an Indonesian hiker near Mount Dukono’s crater in North Halmahera, following the volcano’s eruption on May 8. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on May 9 that two missing Singaporean hikers were located about 20 to 30 metres from the crater rim, but evacuation was hindered by extreme terrain and escalating volcanic activity.

The agency stressed that operations must follow safety recommendations from the Mount Dukono Volcano Observation Post. Officials confirmed the Indonesian victim was buried under volcanic ash roughly 600 metres from the crater. Search efforts continue under hazardous conditions.
