WASHINGTON, 20 May — The US military has been openly broadcasting the locations of surveillance flights near Cuba, a move analysts say is deliberate to signal pressure on Havana’s communist leadership. BBC Verify reported at least five US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft and three MQ-4C Triton drones operating in the Caribbean since May 11, some flying within 80km of Cuba.

UK drone expert Dr Steve Wright noted that leaving flight transponders on is “likely deliberate,” sending a message that Washington “has eyes in the sky.” The deployment comes as tensions rise following a US-imposed oil blockade.
Reports by Axios claimed Cuba had acquired drones capable of striking the US mainland, though Havana denied any hostile intent, accusing Washington of fabricating grounds for intervention. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, offered a “new relationship” with Cubans, blaming hardships on communist leadership rather than the blockade.
