KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state is unlikely to hold its election simultaneously with the next general election due to the wide gap in electoral cycles. With two‑and‑a‑half years left in its current term, Chow argued it would be unfair to dissolve the assembly early, stressing the mandate given by voters must be respected.

He noted disrupted election calendars have complicated coordination between state and federal polls. While other states may choose early dissolution, Chow said Penang will await the party’s decision. Penang last held its state election on August 12, 2023.
