Rafizi Warns Democracy Needs Urgent Reform to Break Cycle of Public Distrust

1 min read

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 – Former Economy Minister and Bersama leader Rafizi Ramli has called for urgent reforms to address the weaknesses of democracy, warning that without structural change, governments worldwide risk losing public trust. Speaking on democratic challenges, Rafizi said Malaysia’s struggles reflect a global trend where opposition parties gain popularity by appealing to emotions – whether anti-immigrant, racial, religious, or nationalist – but fail to meet expectations once in power.

He stressed that democracy risks becoming a mere vehicle for political competition rather than a system capable of solving society’s problems. “When challengers replace governments, the people remain dissatisfied because the problems are not resolved. Expectations are unmet, and the cycle continues,” Rafizi explained.

In an era shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid digitalisation, he noted that citizens expect speed and efficiency. Government processes perceived as slow are quickly judged inadequate. “Business as usual no longer works,” he said, adding that the real challenge lies in widening social and economic inequality.

Rafizi argued that political parties often avoid confronting the economic order that dictates wages, social safety nets, and public goods. Until these structures are dismantled, he warned, democracy will remain vulnerable to disillusionment. His remarks position him as a spokesperson for reform, urging Malaysia and other nations to rethink governance models to restore faith in democratic institutions.
